GENERAL SURROGATE PROCESS
Below you will find the general steps taken throughout your journey from the time you fill out your application until the time of birth.
BECOME A PART OF OUR FAMILY
FILL OUT THE PRE-APPLICATION FOUND ON THIS WEBSITE
After completing the intake form, you will be contacted to discuss the qualifications to make sure surrogacy is a good fit for you and your family. At this point, you will be sent a full profile application, go over compensation and fees, and talk about how this process will look specifically for you.
PSYCHOLOGICAL SCREENING AND RECORDS REVIEW
We will collect your medical records from your OB and delivery hospitals from all of your pregnancies. These records will be reviewed to ensure there are no major complications that would disqualify you from being a good candidate. Once we have reviewed the records and pre-qualified you, we will set you up for a psychological screening prior to being presented to intended parents. This process can take an hour or two and will be done in person or via Skype depending on your location.
MATCHING WITH INTENDED PARENTS
Once your full application and profile are complete, the information will be shown directly to independent intended parents for review. When a match is found, you will be contacted to see if the match is mutual. If so, the fun begins!
Your medical records will be sent directly to the Reproductive Endocrinologist (fertility doctor) that your IPs are using for review. If the RE decides you are a good candidate for the IPs, you will be scheduled for your screening. This could take place close to where you live or out of state. If travel is necessary for these appointments, it is usually for 1-3 days and all expenses are covered by the intended parents.
If screening goes well and you are given the green light to proceed, the next step is contracts. Typically, the IPs attorney will draft up the contract and you will be able to review it with your own legal representation. After negotiations are complete, both parties will sign off and move one step closer to transfer.
CYCLING AND TRANSFER
Once the RE has received legal clearance from the attorneys, you will receive a calendar with dates to start certain medications and a target transfer date. These medications may be in the form of pills, suppositories, injections, or a mix of all three. You will need to be comfortable with taking all medications as directed for many weeks. If pregnancy is achieved, a surrogate is typically on her cycling medications until 10-12 weeks pregnant. You will attend appointments at a local monitoring clinic to watch how your body is responding to the medications. There will typically be 2-4 appointments where your blood will be drawn and an ultrasound will be performed. If your body is responding well to the meds and your lining fluffs up nicely, you will be set for transfer!
TRANSFER AND THE TWO WEEK WAIT
Transfer will once again occur in the state where the RE is. So you will typically travel back to the same doctor you saw previously for med screening. The trip for transfer is typically around 3-5 days long. Once again, there will be no expense to you as the surrogate. Each doctor will have different protocols which can range from resuming normal activity to 3 days of bedrest. It is important to follow your doctor’s protocol and plan your transfer trip accordingly. We as your agency will assist you in making these plans. After you go home, you will wait approximately 10 days from the time of transfer to take your first blood pregnancy test.
CONFIRMATION OF PREGNANCY
If your blood pregnancy test (BETA) is positive, you are pregnant! You will then follow up with 1 to 2 more blood tests to make sure the pregnancy is progressing normally. Around 6 weeks pregnant (dependent on your RE’s protocol) you will be seen locally at your monitoring clinic for your first ultrasound. Typically, surrogates will have two to three ultrasounds in the first few weeks. Around 10 weeks pregnant, your RE will release you from his or her care and it is time to see your regular OB/GYN.
Your pregnancy will be treated in a similar fashion to your own. All appointments will occur locally to you so your life remains as normal as possible. There will be no relocating or major life changes for you during the pregnancy.
PRE BIRTH ORDER
If your state allows, your IPs attorney will have a pre birth order drafted up to name the IPs as the legal parents to the child you are carrying before he or she is born. If PBOs are not granted in your state, the process will occur after birth. All of this will be communicated to you by your agency and attorney to make the process as smooth as possible.
When it comes time to the baby to be born, the intended parents will travel to your city and await the birth. Many IPs want to be involved and a part of the birth if the surrogate is comfortable. This, after all, is a moment they have been waiting for for a very long time! You will get the chance to experience one of the most beautiful things. Seeing a child handed over to very deserving parents who have longed for that baby for so long is unlike anything else.
